Sembawang, formally Sembawang New Town, is an urban planning region and residential town situated in the northernmost crown of the North Area of Singapore.
Despite the comparatively substantial development in the residential area that is newest, Sembawang stay a mostly suburban area that is residential, with industrial, military and recreational facilities at its periphery. It continues to manage routine transport traffic now along its wharves, and sponsored a major naval base and port facilities since the early 20th century.
The Sembawang place in the early twentieth century was the site of the Nee Soon Rubber estate. During the colonial times, Sembawang was home to a leading British naval base, its building of which started in 1928 and was finished in 1938. The base contained dockyards, wharves and workshops, in addition to supporting administrative, residential as well as commercial places.
